While the Scicloj group has been building a toolkit for data and science in Clojure, it has also been organizing various community projects.
Online meetups, various study groups, mentoring newcomers, learning resources, and in-person meetups, are some of the projects we have been running during the last six years. Arguably, they have often been relevant and impactful for broader goals of Clojure communities, beyond the scientific point of view.
As the projects are maturing on the technical side, we are facing some opportunities and challenges for 2025. In the current balance of technical and social, we will need more help in community building.
If you care about Clojure, love working with people, and have some time to dedicate to that more-or-less continuously, then you may consider volunteering.
I unfortunately do not have the time to do this myself, but I’d like to reiterate what an important role it is. I am really appreciative of the work that the Scicloj community does in this area, in particular Daniel does an amazing job organising it all but there are many others contributing in the background to make Scicloj a vibrant space in the Clojure community.
As technical geeks, the “soft” work like this is often not given the importance it deserves, but it makes a huge difference in making our community a welcoming and approachable place, and in reducing friction when newcomers want to participate. It sometimes (to me, at least) doesn’t feel like actual work compared to bashing out code, but it is time consuming and often under-appreciated work which really makes a huge difference. If you have some time to spare and you think your skills would match this area, it’s a great way to make a valuable contribution to the community.
Thanks again Daniel, and the rest of the folk involved in Scicloj!
I’m pretty much new to Clojure, so, I wonder if there’s anything I can help with
I have some time I can dedicate to it, as well as I think it’s a great chance to get involved with the community, right on the beginning of my Clojure Journey!
